Assessing Parents with Learning Disability
The Child at the Centre

The child is always at the centre of our work.  We recognise the importance of the
parent in achieving the best outcomes for their children.  We believe that where
concerns have been identified, parents with learning disability deserve the same
chance as non-disabled parents to care for their children.  We also believe that
parents with learning disability need a specialised approach if the chance to deliver,
develop, and maintain good enough parenting is to be fair, effective and
sustainable.

Ideally, we would aim to work with families as early as possible.  Families have said
that they want good help before a crisis develops.  Our services include pre-birth
assessment and support to enable the very best start for children.

Validated Assessment Tools
We use a range of assessment tools including the Graded Care Profile and
McGraw's Parenting Assessment Manual which is specifically developed for
assessment with parents who have learning disabilities.  All assessments are
undertaken in line with the DOH Framework, we will adapt the assessment
approach and format to meet he needs of each family we work with.

Individualised, Specialist Assessment
Our work with parents with learning disabilities includes functional, communication
and cognitive
assessment to help gauge strengths, the appropriate assessment style
and areas
of focus.   A sound understanding of parenting strength and deficits,
helps us to
take a strengths focused approach to assessment and to deliver support
that
develops skills in ways that meet parental learning preferences and abilities. This
approach includes the individualised adaptation of resources, the development and
assessment of reliable support circles

Whole Family Assessment
We are able to undertake whole family assessment and take an ecological approach
to ensure that assessments are robust and complete.  We work with mothers and
fathers, as well as assessing the role of wider family members or support available
to the family.

Complete Assessment and Support
Our residential assessments are undertaken in domestic sized settings and are also
finalised by a period of transference to the home environment to enable the
embedding of learnt skills and to maximise the potential of those skills and
practices
being continued at home.

Where possible, we aim to offer a range of assessment format combinations
including reverse residential.
