Parents with poor Mental Health
Think Family
OneOneCoCo works with parents with a history of psychological, emotional, and
connected addiction problems. We subscribe to recovery based approaches, placing
the children of the families at the centre of our work.
This approach recognises that many parents with mental health problems are good
parents; that many can sustain a level of good enough parenting with appropriate
and reliable supports. It is our role in parenting capacity assessment to understand
the nature—history, patterns, chronicity of poor mental health, along with the
supports, informal and formal, around the family.
The Recovery Approach
The recovery approach in the context of parenting capacity assessment and support
assists parents in recognising and addressing difficulties, with a clear focused child-
centred perspective.
OneOneCoCo’s comprehensive assessments take an ecological approach in assessing
the impact ill-health or mental disorder has on each child of the family, considering
their age and individual need and how symptoms impact the child. We will assess the
quality of attachment, parent and child interaction, and family risk.
Expert Multi Disciplinary Assessment
Our assessments consider the need for further intervention alongside parental
motivation, insight and potential for change within the child’s time-frame.
Our experience includes working with families where there are concerns linked to
parental mental ill-health including depression, a history of acute episodes of poor
mental disorders and enduring conditions such as personality disorder, and post
traumatic stress disorder.
OneOneCoCo’s multi-disciplinary team comprises family support, social workers,
consultant psychologist, counselling psychologist specialising in personality and
PTSD, child development, and psychiatry and nursing professionals.
